TV Q and A With David Inman

Kyle Chandler,
Kyle Chandler, "Homefront"

Q. I recall a TV series that took place during World War II and starred Kyle Chandler of “Friday Night Lights” and “Super 8.” Can you tell me the title?

A. That was “Homefront,” and it ran on ABC from 1991 to 1993. It was set in a small Ohio town right after World War II and dealt with the lives and loves of several families.

Chandler played Jeff Metcalf, son of middle-class widow Anne (played by Wendy Phillips). Ken Jenkins, later Dr. Bob Kelso on “Scrubs,” and Mimi Kennedy played the upper-class Sloans. Dick Anthony Williams, Hattie Winston (later Margaret on “Becker”) and Sterling Macer Jr. were the African-American Davis family. John Slattery, who plays Roger Sterling on “Mad Men,” was Al Kahn, who was trying to organize the workers at the Sloan factory.

Alas, “Homefront” isn’t on DVD.
