Kyle Chandler's Best List

"Right before my father passed away, he gave me a book. I wasn't much of a reader, so I put it away and forgot about it. But 20 years later, we found the book up in my toy chest when my mom was moving out of the house. It was The Three Musketeers, and I'll be damned, I wished I'd read it when I was a kid. It has everything you want to read about as a young man: honor and duty, battle, friendship and mystery, and of course beautiful women in distress."

"I have some expensive cameras, like the Nikon D200, which is the cream of the crop of the digital SLRs. But the real secret is my $200 Sony Cyber-shot, which I set on 400 speed and can hold anywhere. Nobody knows I'm taking the shot, and it gives beautiful, candid photographs that aren't perfect. I find that art doesn't come out of perfection."

"Crescent Beach on Siesta Key, Florida. The sand is like powdered sugar because it's made almost entirely of quartz. It's right on the Gulf of Mexico, and it has a great vibe."

"Motorcycles are an addiction for me. A couple years ago on Valentine's Day, my wife gave me a sport-touring bike, the Yamaha FJR1300. I'd owned a Harley that I'd driven cross-country, but some idiot stole it outside a bar. I love the Yamaha because it's fast and built for long hauls and the windies. I've taken it out to Mount Zion and to the Grand Canyon and over Hoover Dam. It really lets you feel like you're part of the landscape."

"I wear a black Omega Speedmaster Professional. I used to have to look at it all the time on Early Edition, and it was too cool to leave behind on set. It's the same kind of watch Neil Armstrong wore on the moon. He needed something with a winder because automatic watches don't work in space. I like that I have to wind it every day."

"Almost every car I've ever had has been a convertible, and the greatest of all was my Volkswagen Thing. I never should have gotten rid of it. It's a little tin can with an engine and wheels, but it's got soul. It's a four-door four-seater, which is hard to find. It's the ultimate beach car, and I love that everybody can just climb in and off we go."

"My brothers and I love to golf. We're very competitive, but I just found my secret weapon, which is the TaylorMade r7 SuperQuad driver. I was using a one or two iron before that, but this one gives me so much more power from the tee. I don't even have to push hard on this thing and it goes 280 yards. I love it."

"I've always been a fan of the fountain pen. My girls bought me the Cross Townsend platinum-plated fountain pen for Christmas, and it's a beauty. I like writing letters. E-mail just doesn't have the same impact."

"The Continental Club in Austin has history you can almost taste. I like to go there for a cold beer and a shot, but you also get some of the best musicians in the world dropping by. One weekend last summer, the Rolling Stones dropped by. Somehow I missed them, so now every time I'm there, I keep looking around the room to see who might be hiding in a corner."

Just in time for Father's Day.
